(PJKS-An
ISO :9001-2000 NGO) is a non-government, non-profit
organisation that has been working for the empowerment of the marginalised and
deprived communities in Uttarakhand, India. PJKS has been extensively
involved in research and documentation, extension, lobbying and advocacy,
community mobilization and capacity building at the grassroots. The organisation
is committed towards the empowerment of women, strengthening of Panchayat Raj
Institutions (PRIs) and civil society organisations, conservation and
sustainable utilization of the natural resources, micro enterprise development,
skill development and enhancing rural livelihoods in the remotest of remote
villages in Uttarakhand.
Roots
Although formally registered in 1990, the roots of the organisation date back to the early eighties when the founders of the organisation were involved in various student movements. Hailing from rural
backgrounds, initially these young men and women waged a campaign for improving
the educational standards in the rural areas. They were distraught by the fact
that in remote and distant villages the teachers in government schools were
frequently absent. They successfully lobbied for improving attendance of the
teachers in the schools. Subsequently, they joined the movement for the
creation of a separate state of Uttarakhand (Uttarakhand Movement) as they
realized that being a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh, the aspirations and
needs of the hill people were being ignored. They were also closely associated
with the Uttarakhand Jan Parishad and Uttarakhand Jan Sanghursh Vahini. Later they were also instrumental in waging a
war against child labour through the Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
SCOPE OF WORK
In its initial years PJKS
focused its activities entirely in the Bhilangana Block of district Tehri
Garhwal in Uttarakhand. It has been working in some of the remotest villages
and empowering the most marginalised sections of the society comprising of
Below Poverty Line (BPL), SC and ST populations. Interior villages, such as
Gangi, Pinswed and Gewali, where the people are living a sub-human existence,
being deprived of government support services and depending solely upon sheep
rearing and potato cultivation, have also been supported by the organisation. In recent years, PJKS has also initiated its
activities in Pauri, Thalisain, Pabo and Beerokhal blocks of Pauri district. It
is also making its presence felt in the districts of Dehradun and Rudraprayag.
It is also worth mentioning that PJKS has been conducting research on diverse issues of social relevance in various parts of Uttarakhand. Thus in terms of its research and documentation initiatives its scope of operation is much wider. The organisation is also engaged in the capacity assessment, networking and capacity building of NGOs from different parts of the state.
