The Himalayan
region, being in the seismic zone, is highly prone to earthquakes. In the past,
several earthquakes have rocked the Himalayas and have claimed many lives
besides maiming hundreds and rendering even a greater number homeless. Ever
since its inception PJKS has been involved in emergency relief whenever an
earthquake has occurred
in the region. In the spring of 1999, the Chamoli earthquake caused massive
damage to life andproperty. 20 villages in the Bhilangana block of Tehri
District were badly affected by the earthquake. PJKS immediately involved itself
in relief operations for restoring normalcy with the support of Council for
Advancement of Peoples Action and Rural Technology (CAPART). Estimation of loss
was done and it was found that 5 humans had lost their lives and 90 had been
injured, 425 houses completely and 615 houses partially damaged. A large number
of cattle had been buried under the debris.
The organisation took up the task of relief and rehabilitation work for the
quake affected families. Clothing and blankets were provided to 100 families.
Tarpaulin sheets were also provided and the people were helped in the
construction of temporary shelters. Relief materials, food and medicines were
distributed in these villages. PJKS also contributed its assistance in times of
frequent landslides, forest fires and other disasters.
