PJKS has been closely
involved in horticulture development programmes. Its involvement with
horticulture started when under its various watershed development programmes
PJKS encouraged plantations in the catchment areas and undertook social
forestry programmes. Providing seedlings to the communities for plantation on
the boundaries of their fields has been an important entry point activity for
the various programmes of the organisation.
Since the year 2002 the
organisation is implementing a project for horticulture development in the
Bhilangana Block. Being implemented in the

nutritional levels.
In the initial phase
community meetings, to form users’ groups and for the formulation of project
implementation strategy, were organised. The target group under the project
comprises of 200 persons and surveys for identification of the beneficiaries
were conducted. The programme has
accorded priority to BPL families with special focus on SC, ST and OBC. Special
attention has been given to women headed households.
PJKS
has established linkages with the State Horticulture Department and
At
the outset, seedlings were being obtained from various government run nurseries
in Tehri, Ranichauri, Dehradun and Rishikesh. However, now PJKS has also
established its own nurseries.
During
the first two years of the project 60 trees were distributed every year to each
of the 200 beneficiary families. Thus, a total of 24,000 fruit trees have been
planted so far in the 3 project villages. In addition to this, Kathas (religious
discourses) have been organised and seedlings have been distributed as prasad
to all those who attended the Kathas. Those who received the seedlings as
prasad, considered them as highly sacred and planted them at appropriate places
and are taking very good care of them. This has led to further popularity of
horticulture programme. The seedlings
that have been planted include Sweet Lemon (Mausambi), Lemon (Kagji), Lemon
(Barahmasi),
More than 24,000 seedlings
have been planted by 200 families. Over the coming years the sale of
horticulture produce would greatly enhance the family income. The consumption of
citrus fruits is also expected to improve the nutritional levels and curb the
Vitamin C & D deficiencies amongst the hill women.
"
It may not be
possible to measure the impacts of the project at this juncture since the
plantations are not yet giving yield. However, some of the measurable impacts
are that more than 24,000 seedlings have been planted by 200 families. The
expected impacts over the coming years are that the sale of the horticulture
produce would greatly enhance the family income, particularly for women, who
are actually responsible for agricultural operations. Within the district, markets
are available at Chamiyala, Ghansali, Ghonti and Tehri. PJKS is also
establishing linkages to market the produce in Dehradun, Rishikesh as well as
Chamba. The household consumption of citrus fruits is also expected to improve
the nutritional levels and curb the Vitamin C & D deficiencies amongst the
hill women.
