PJKS believes in
participatory sustainable mountain development through eco tourism.
People in hills of Uttarakhand, where there are no major industries have viewed
the tourism as there main opening for supplementing their income and enhancing
their livelihood opportunities. It was mainly religious pilgrimage in the hills
running through the decades and even centuries that was mainly eyed on by
locals. But usually it happens that those who undertake such pilgrimage do not
have considerable amount of money to spend. So , on the one hand though there
where stresses on local resources because of volumes of pilgrims and tourist the
ecnoomic benefit to individual families and community were not substantial.
Paradoxically, even sometimes the locals, because of this large pilgrimage in
flow had to suffer the pains of the price rise in local commodities like milk,
fruits, food, vegetables etc, this created sometimes a lot of heart burning
among the , communities.
As such PJKS has got an
vision and
operational plans for making these inflows of pilgrimage profitable as well as
devising the tourism processes in such a way that it takes the form of
sustainable eco tourism. In built in our strategy is also the training of locals
in respecting the sensitivities of tourist and simultaneously motivating them to
be very much conscious of gender issues among their own, communities also.
PJKS visualizes the need of making everything participatory in nature. It would also encourage the people to preserve those very facets of nature or its bounties in local environment and ecological settings which are really the prime pull for attracting national and international tourists to the native areas.
In it’s strategy, there also is investigating and documenting the causes of eco degradation such as depletion of forests, water resources etc. As such our strategy has always been not only to check the natural or man made degradations after discussing the ways and means of the operational procedures in public forums, but we go further so that the enhancement of the nature’s capital and social capital build up , which in turn would give boost to the eco tourism.
Waste management, clean fuel supply for tourist for their varied uses are essential for any form of eco tourism. Our Institution works on these. We also encourage people in avoiding uses of chemicals;. We encourage the intake of organic foods and also the organic disposal of generated ways. Leisure time activities, if properly designed in the hills would further enhance the earning capacity of the community in their tourism trade. The target segment for the marketing of eco tourism under our various projects comprises domestic as well as foreign tourists and in particular:-
· Nature lovers
· People interested to know about the rural life
· Wild life enthusiast
· Writers needing peace and tranquility
· Adventure sport lovers
· Trekkers and hikers.
The help of experts
and utilization of technical support system would also be continuously taken
during the programmes PJKS also think of e-marketing all the positive
opportunities of eco tourism in the area so that a blooming of many macro
enterprises take place.
PJKS also works
on this philosophy that no trickle down benefits come to the locals, if they are
not directly involved as service providers to the tourist in their different
capacities like tourist guide paying guest accommodation providers , direct
suppliers of commodities like food, fruits, vegetables, milk etc and also
direct sellers of local handicrafts. PJKS request all to
help the organizations in its persuades of eco tourism in the fragile mountains
of Uttarakhand. We also want to interlink the workings on the eco tourism issues
with climate change concerns, that has even started impacting our this remote
Zone, recently.
We,
definitely hope, that, visitors and Tourists, to the local mountain rural
settings, in this Himalayan part of India, would bear with existing
infrastructural constraints.
